If you ask me, a city’s strippers say a lot about a city. In NYC, exotic dancers are often immigrants – a tribute to the Statue of Liberty in a perverse sense, inasmuch as it’s the highest job any fresh off the boat female, doctor or uneducated, can expect to get in Gotham. In the Windy City, exotic dancers are frequently new to the city – the kind of farm-girl-goes-to-the-city fantasy realized, and enhanced by the high pay of what is, for many, an exciting job that pays more than what most young girls’ parents earn each year – combined – and involves lots of big city partying with the who’s who of Chicago.

And then there’s LA. Los Angeles strippers are quintessentially Los Angeles: many young beautiful girls who are pursuing acting or modeling careers – or are active in either of those fields – who would prefer exhibiting their bodies to appreciative onlookers over serving french fries to ungrateful restaurant patrons. And in some sense, these ladies also capture a certain aspirational sense of Los Angeles. Where New York is full of opportunity waiting to exploited and where Chicago is similarly so, except for immigrants from the farmland, Los Angeles is place of little opportunity and great aspirations. Strippers in Los Angeles are thus the realists of the place, who retain their hopes with the full knowledge that hope doesn’t pay the bills.
